Self Help Tips For Snoring Problems

Tip! Avoid alcohol many hours before going to bed. Snoring is more likely when muscle relaxation occurs.

There are many valid reasons for wanting to stop snoring. Snoring can not only be a severe annoyance to anyone sleeping within earshot of the snorer, but the snorer can also suffer the effects during waking hours. Many people who snore find themselves tired during the day and often wake up with headaches. Snoring isn’t good for anyone, but how do you stop? There are several steps you can take yourself to try and reduce or eliminate snoring. However, you should always consult your doctor to determine if your snoring is caused by a more serious condition known as sleep apnea.

Sleeping Position

Almost all snorers snore when they are sleeping on their back. However, the solution of having your partner push you over every night isn’t exactly feasible for the long term. Luckily there are several options you can try. A real DIY solution is sewing something in the back of your night shirt which makes it extremely uncomfortable to sleep on your back. Perhaps a more comfortable solution is to try a special pillow which is designed to make side-sleeping more comfortable and natural.

Tip! There are now anti-snoring dental devices on the market that prevent your lower jaw from falling back while you sleep. You may want to see a dentist for information about this device if the above 7 steps don’t seem to be helping.

Food and Drink

If you drink alcohol, especially within four hours before you go to sleep, you are certainly encouraging snoring. Alcohol works to relax throat muscles which can cause snoring. Cutting down on your alcohol consumption can reduce or entirely eliminate your snoring.

Another cause for snoring can be a sensitivity or allergy to certain food which may increase mucus production in the throat and nasal passages. The most common culprits are dairy products and nuts, however just about any food allergy can cause this. Try to eliminate certain foods from your diet for several days to see if they have any affect on your snoring.

Excess Weight

If you are overweight and snore, your excess weight may be the cause. People who are obese tend to carry additional weight around their neck. This puts pressure on the airways and can cause snoring. By losing weight not only are you reducing the chances that you will snore, but you are reducing your risk for numerous health problems.

Tip! If a cold or allergy causes your snoring speak to your doctor about taking allergy or cold medication. However, make sure the medication is free of antihistaminic side effects, which can worsen snoring.
