Discover The "Hidden" Problems Associated With Snoring

Tip! If you’re a smoker, kick the habit. Cigarette smoking can disturb your sleep and can increase the likelihood of snoring.

Snoring is a symptom of a number of physical problems - and can lead to many more - but most people don’t realize it’s also responsible for both mental and emotional problems.

Those who don’t suffer with the problem but live with someone who does can suffer greatly. There have even been cases where it has been the grounds for divorce.

And not only the partners of snorers suffer. Anyone who is near a snorer can suffer as well. This can include other family members, neighbors, or friends. Snoring can reach some pretty high sound levels, and travel through walls in many cases.

Tip! Avoid alcohol many hours before going to bed. Snoring is more likely when muscle relaxation occurs.

The lack of sleep that can come from a snoring problem - both for the snorer and others around them - can lead to emotional and mental problems, such as irritability, drowsiness and general unhappiness.

Other problems include:

- depression - anxiety - desperation - low confidence and self-esteem - resentment - helplessness - anger - exhaustion

For snorers and those around them who are affected by it, it can sometimes be dangerous operating heavy machinery, working in dangerous environments or simply driving to work in the morning. Because the lack of sleep can lead to drowsiness and exhaustion, otherwise simple tasks can become dangerous.

Most of the attention related to snoring is paid to the physical problems that go along with it, but these emotional problems are just as important.

Tip! If a cold or allergy causes your snoring speak to your doctor about taking allergy or cold medication. However, make sure the medication is free of antihistaminic side effects, which can worsen snoring.

Snorers are often embarrassed by their snoring and may be afraid of falling asleep in a public place. The irony is, because snorers can be so self-conscious about sleeping, they may not get enough of it which can lead to them falling asleep when they shouldn’t.

Identifying the underlying cause of snoring is important as is treating it properly - for the sake of both the physical and the mental health of those afflicted and the people around them.
